It’s that time of the year! The first grizzlies in Grand Teton & Yellowstone National Parks were seen a few weeks back, and Yellowstone Day Tours’ first sighting happened yesterday, 04/13/2025.

With not a cloud in the sky, at the northern end of Grand Teton National Park, our crew saw a lone, male grizzly bear wandering in the snowy flats. After the big bear meandered away, we checked out his tracks! Look how big they are!

One of our guests recently asked us if it was normal to see grizzlies this early, and when do grizzly bears come out of hibernation?
The answer is, yes! The grizzly bears are waking up right on time this year, maybe slightly earlier due to the unseasonably warm temperatures throughout the end of winter. Male grizzlies begin waking up in the middle of March, while many female grizzly bears are still in hibernation. Females awake throughout mid April to early May. The best time to view grizzly bears in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks is undoubtedly May through the end of June. All of the bears are awake and active; cubs are out and exploring for the first time; and the cooler temperatures and ample food in the valleys keeps them closer to the roads.
We are almost at our favorite time of the year - Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks are only a few weeks out from opening for motorized traffic! The inner park road of Grand Teton National Park opens on May 1, 2025. Yellowstone National Park opens from Jackson Hole on May 9, 2025.
